Where in the world is Borneo Island?
Borneo is the third largest island in the world after Greenland (No.1) and New Guinea(No.2). The island is located at the centre of Maritime Southeast Asia. Administratively, this island is divided between 3 countries Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.

  • Indonesians refer to the island as "Kalimantan." However, for people outside of Indonesia, "Kalimantan" refers to the area that Indonesia occupies on the island of Borneo (East Borneo).
  • Malaysia's region of Borneo is called East Malaysia or Malaysian Borneo.Malaysia occupies the North (Sabah) and West Borneo (Sarawak).
  • The independent nation of occupies the remainder of the island. Brunei is the wealthiest nation in the island of Borneo.

Borneo Island in brief
Borneo is divided into 4 parts namely Sabah (North Borneo), Sarawak (West Borneo), Kalimantan (East Borneo), and Brunei a remnant of a very powerful sultanate located on the north coast of the Island of Borneo. Most of the population is concentrated along the seaboard.

Kalimantan (East Borneo) is divided into 4 provinces namely East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan.

The island of Borneo is very rich in biodiversity with 15,000 species of flowering plants and 3,000 species of trees, 200+ species of terrestrial mammals and 400+ species of birds.

Borneo's highest point is Mount Kinabalu (4,095 m above sea level), and it is located in the heart of Sabah, Malaysia. Mount Kinabalu is also the highest mountain in South East Asia.
